Horses of Hoofprint Bay Breeding and Coat Patterns
Updated · 2 min read
How breeding works
From the Steam page: breed foals "to improve your stock over time." Foals inherit a mix of their parents' coloring, white patterns and even personality traits. Plan stallion and mare pairings for the looks or stats you want.
Because starter horses begin with low stats, the team says breeding for perfect stats is meant to be a long-term goal.
Breeding station lab
Upgrading to advanced building stages unlocks a high-tech breeding station lab that lets you preview possible foals and sell more stud services.
Foals and yearlings
- Nursing mares can go on walks with their foals.
- The May 2026 dev update says a fully upgraded stable holds up to 20 horses plus 13 yearlings in the yearling paddock (the team noted numbers could change). Extra horses can be boarded at the breeder in town for a fee.
Coat colors and patterns
- Patterns are generated by a shader made by programmer Theresa Thoma, based on real horse references (for example telling tobiano apart from frame overo).
- Leopard patterns (as in Appaloosas or Knabstruppers) use three layers: snowcap blankets, spotted blankets, full-body leopard spots of various sizes, and snowflake dots.
- The October 2026 demo update added face markings and appaloosa patterns.
Personality traits
Traits change tendencies such as how quickly a horse gets dirty, how injury-prone it is, or whether it sometimes changes gait on its own. Foals can inherit them, so they matter in breeding.
Buying and selling
You can buy and sell horses in town. The breeder's sales stable lets you filter and sort horses, and the quality on offer depends on your Prestige.
